Why and how to use Velvet underglazes
Velvet underglazes can be used to create decorations on both leather-hard clay and bisque-fired ceramics. On this page, you will get an overview of different ways to use them and how you can achieve clear and beautiful colors. Velvet underglazes are from AMACO, which has been developing ceramic colors since 1920.

Temperature: Cone 5-10
Cone 5 ≈ approx. 1180–1200°C
Cone 6 ≈ 2230–2250°F
Cone 10 ≈ ca. 1280–1300°C

The colors are strong.
The riders don't.
They are easy to work with.
You can paint on finished fired ceramics.
Or directly on clay.
Bright colors that actually last
When you put white frosting over
the colors become deeper and clearer.
This is what gives it the “finished” look.
For best results, we recommend the right glaze on top.
We use a transparent glaze without zinc
which is specially made for underglazes. We recommend the zinc-free glaze (HF-9) from AMACO.
Safe and predictable burning
You get stable results.
The colors hold up well through firing.
Even at high temperatures.
Some colors can be a bit darker
but they still look good.
Important to know
When using zinc-free glaze (HF-9)
Can some bright colors be a little calmer.
This applies to:
V-315 Peach
V-316 Light Pink
V-323 Salmon
The colors do not disappear.
They're just getting a little weaker.
